Racing legend, Mario Andretti has had some epic races in his long and varied career. But, in Mario’s mind this was his finest drive in his career. The 12 Hours of Sebring 1970 in the Ferrari 512S. Mario’s car dropped out with mechanical issues. The Ferrari team switched him to the third place #21 car of Ignazio Giunti /Nino Vaccarella. The Gulf/Porsche 917 of Pedro Rodriguez /Leo Kinnunen/Jo Siffert had the lead by a country mile. So the chase was on to try to catch the second place 908 of Steve McQueen/Peter Revson Mario drove flat-out in the final stint. He was able to not only catch and pass the McQueen/Revson Porsche for second. The battle turned out to be for the win. This was due to a mechanical issue with the leading Gulf/Porsche 917 Rodriguez/Kinnunen/Siffert. A storming drive and a well earned victory for Mario, Giunti, Vaccarella and the Ferrari team. As seen on Silodrome, Petrolicious and Spiegel.de for the RRDC “Evening with Mario Andretti” Dinner at Long Beach in 2014.
